Bishop Wanjiru looses starehe seat

Housing Assistant Minister Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has lost her Starehe constituency seat through an order of the High Court.

The MP now becomes the seventh legislator to lose their parliamentary seat through an election petition after their challengers succeeded in the High Court.

Justice Kihara Kariuki ruled on Friday that Bishop Wanjiru was not validly elected in the exercise that was marred by violence and other election malpractises.

Former area MP Maina Kamanda filed the petition against Bishop Wanjiru who had floored him by 895 votes in the flawed 2007 General Election.

Six other MPs underwent a similar fate when the High Court nullified their election.

Mr Kamanda’s petition is a unique one since he had wanted to be declared a winner and his name substituted with that of Bishop Wanjiru. Mr Kamanda had emerged the winner with 49,306 votes while Bishop Wanjiru got 34,871, a difference of 14,435.

Mr Kamanda who disputed Bishop Wanjiru’s election filed the petition in February 2008 and urged the court to declare him the elected MP for Starehe.

He relied on Section 27(2) of the National Assembly and Presidential Elections Act. The section allows the Speaker to make changes should the court so declare.

However, Justice Kariuki declined to declare Mr Kamanda as the MP, saying the 2007 poll contained too many irregularities and as such only a by-election would be sufficient to settle the leadership dispute.

Woman delivers on board Kenya Airways

A Kenya Airways in-flight crew delivered a baby girl on board a flight that had just landed from Muscat, Oman in Nairobi late last week. Officials said that the mother and baby were "doing fine".

A well-trained Kenya Airways in-flight crew composed of Flight Purser Josephine Towett, flight attendants Oscar Heho, Mitchell Ongeso, Anthony Kuria and Muriithi, Captain Hamdan and first officer Muiruri were cheered by passengers after they successfully midwifed the delivery.

The crew lay the woman in the aisle in economy class while others held up a blanket to create a makeshift delivery room. Flight attendants were assisted by a KQ Nurse Juliana Maithya.

Speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya Airways Chief Operating Officer Bram Stellar confirmed that the baby had been successfully delivered while the aircraft was on the ground at the Airport. The Captain and First Officer waited for the baby to be born before disembarking.

It was the first time that such an event occurred for the crew. Wrapped in a passenger's blanket, the four-kilogram baby was held by a crew member.

"It was already a packed flight from Muscat to Nairobi but passengers and crew were more than happy to make room for one extra person when the lady gave birth to a baby girl, whom we promptly named Zahra," he explained.

The crew laid the woman across a row of seats in economy class while others held up a blanket to create a makeshift delivery room. "Within 15 minutes the baby had been born. We are happy that the birth was normal and the mother and baby are fine," he concluded.

More Kenyans opt to study Accounting in University

We have witnessed, in the recent past, a huge rise in the number of people who are opting to study accounting at university. This is interesting, because not so long ago, accounting tended to be one of the courses that would attract relatively modest numbers of students, as people avoided being termed as 'bean counters.' Accounting was, as it still is, a career that lacks glamour, a career that mostly involves spending all the time in the office.

The chances of your ever becoming famous as an accountant seems very slim indeed, so that the glamour-oriented student, accounting would seem like a relatively poor choice of a study area. This wouldn't have been a particularly big problem, were it not for the fact that a majority of student, at the points in life when people make these types of choices, would indeed be rather 'glamour-oriented.'

So, what changed, between then and now, so that we end up with people struggling to get places in university accounting courses, rather than having people shunning the courses as was previously the case?

Well, one factor behind the growing attractiveness of accounting courses is the realization that accountancy, its relatively lack of glamour notwithstanding, can turn out to be a rather interesting field of work. People are also coming to realize that some of the jobs that look glamorous aren't that exciting to the people who do them, and that some of the can be too stressful to be enjoyable.

Under the latter scheme of thinking, one will definitely appreciate the peace of mind that a competent accountant stands to enjoy, through the straightforward 9 to 5 routine, bereft of drama episodes. Many people are also coming to realize that accountants are in fact the behind-the-scenes characters who run the world. They are the 'illuminati' everyone keeps on looking for. You don't see them, but you see and feel the effects of the various decisions they make on behalf of their organizations.

Accounting also happens to be one of the study areas that have benefitted from the rising cost of education. As education becomes more and more expensive, people find themselves increasingly being forced to go into areas that give them employable skills; rather than going into areas 'where their hearts are drawn.' And when one starts to think in terms of employable skills, accounting is one of the areas that rank high.

After all, not every organization will need a teacher (only schools do), and not every organization will need a doctor (only hospitals do) - but virtually every organization needs an accountant. The end result is a situation where the demand for accountants keeps on growing every passing day, with the birth of every new organization, and with the expansion of every existing organization. So for the person who wants a degree that will almost definitely give them a job, and a degree with which there will be almost limitless opportunities as one advances in skills and experience, accounting turns out to be the thing to study.

The easy way to get a bachelors degree online

It is pretty much common knowledge that an advanced educational degree in your hand can make all the difference in the world as to how much you earn. In fact, the disparity between high school graduates' earning potential and that of someone with a bachelor degree is phenomenal; the higher educated person's lifetime earning potential being almost double that of the high school graduate. Knowing that, why would you not consider obtaining your bachelor degree? Sure, time and circumstance may prevent you from returning to the local college to pursue higher education but there are plenty of online college bachelor degree programs available.

You Do Not Want to Change Jobs?

Even if you do not want to leave your chosen career, you would more than likely not turn down a chance for an increase in your present wage or salary, would you? The fact is that most workers who improve their educational standing with an online degree find that they are able to command higher salaries even within the company with which they are currently employed. Employers recognize the value of a bachelor degree and will pay extra to keep highly educated employees on their payroll. This makes a degree the perfect investment for your future earning capacity.

Of course, you have probably heard all of this talk about improving your earnings prospects before, haven't you? And chances are that you, like many other people, have been stymied in your plans to obtain higher education by the rigors of your work schedule. Well, an online college bachelor degree is the perfect choice for the busy employee who simply can not find the time to get to classes on campus. Simply log onto your university account and watch the lectures at your own convenience!

You also have no desire to waste either your time or money on a bachelor's degree that will ultimately not stand up to an employer's scrutiny or be recognized by other universities you may wish to attend in the future. Well, there are plenty of online college bachelor degree programs that are fully accredited by recognized accreditation agencies. That means that these online college bachelor degree programs are acknowledged by both online and brick-and-mortar colleges as meeting all of the necessary standards for accreditation. Thus, they are equal in worth to any bachelor degree earned at a campus-oriented college.

The best news is that your degree can be earned in but a fraction of the time it would take you to achieve in a traditional setting. Each credit hour is also generally less expensive than the same courses taken on campus. The bottom line is that an online degree is the most cost and time-effective way for you to achieve your income goals while still managing the many demands of your current life.

Avoid trouble with your credit card company

Having financial freedom can be considered a dream for many Americans. In many people's mind, becoming debt free seems to be an impossible mission especially during economy crisis. When they have accumulated a big sum of credit card debt, they choose to ignore it because they have no confidence to repay their debt in full.

If you intend to do the same, I would like to "warn" you to change your mind. Although failure to pay off your debt can't land you in jail, there are many possible consequences you have to face.

First thing first, when you have late payments, it is for sure that you can't avoid yourself from high late fee charges. The longer you drag your payment, the more fees you will accumulate.

Once your past due is more than 30 days, your lender has the right to report your late payment to all the major credit reporting agencies. In other words, whenever you miss your payment, your credit rating is affected. This damaging entry will stay on your credit file for 7 years.

When you continue not paying your credit card bills, your creditor will definitely start the collection action. You will receive reminder letters and phone calls from time to time to remind you to make payment as soon as possible. The creditor normally starts making phone calls in courteous manner. If there is no action from you, the creditor probably sells off your account to debt collection agent. The collection agent normally uses harsh tactics to collect the debts. Are you prepared to face these?

Once your debt is 6 months old, your card provider has the right to cancel your card and file a lawsuit to demand for payment. When you are being sued, you will be asked to attend to the court to defend yourself. If you fail to settle your debt with your creditor and the creditor wins the lawsuit, you will be granted a judgment. You need to pay your debt in full. At the same time, it is compulsory for you to pay the court fee. Again, your credit rating will be badly affected.

No matter how tough your life is, you need to face it with courage. You are reminded to be responsible for what you have done. There is no short cut for you to erase your debt. Since you are the one who swipe the card, you should find ways to get rid of the outstanding in a proper manner.

Buying a used car?Be on the look out

If you buy a used car it can save you a lot of time and hassle, as well as tons of money. If you're looking to buy a car, don't overlook used cars during your search. Even cars that are only a couple years old will be much more affordable than brand new cars. And buying a used car doesn't have to be risky investment. If you follow these helpful tips, you can save yourself money when buying a car and still get a great vehicle in the process.

Often, people go into car buying knowing exactly the type of car they want. They narrow their search to only this pre-determined type of car. But if you're looking to get a used car, you may want to expand your horizons. Many types of cars may still fit your budget and needs, even if they are not the exact style of car you were originally hoping to buy. Go into your used car search with an open mind and you're sure to find a vehicle that's right for you.

When you buy a used car, you should plan on a healthy amount of research. Because the car has been in use for some period of time, you as the buyer need to know exactly what kind of use it was put to. You should find out the mileage on the car and what kind of condition it is in. Has it been in any major accidents? Has it needed any significant repairs? Companies like AutoCheck and Carfax can run vehicle history reports that delve into the history of the car and what it has been through. Getting a report like this is vital before making a decision on a used car.

Though likely cheaper than a new car, price is still a factor when purchasing a used car. You should know before buying how much you have available to spend. Understand how much money you can put down and how much you can afford to pay each month. Determining a price range before looking for a car can help narrow the field and quicken the process.

Also make sure you have financing for the car. Even with a used car, you may need to get a loan from a bank or dealership in order to make the purchase. If so, try to get your loan from a bank rather than a dealership and before you make a decision. Of course, with used cars it is sometimes also possible to pay in cash up front, depending on the price of the vehicle.

Test driving is vital when deciding on a used car. A dealership or private owner may claim the car is in perfect condition, but you should still test drive it for yourself to ensure that that is true. Things like hill-climbing power, acceleration, engine noise and braking are things you'll need to assess for yourself and by driving the car first hand. Test driving will also give you a feel for the car in general, and may let you know if it is right for you or not.

A used car is a great option for those who might not have the money for a brand new car. And it's just as possible to fall in love with a used car as with a new one. Who knows? The car of your dreams could have been the car of someone else's dreams as well.

Getting best deal on Debt Consolidation

People with unreliable credit history might not be able to get their lenders to reduce their interest rates on their own. This is where debt consolidation loans come into the picture. This does not mean however that you can select just any debt consolidation scheme that comes your way.

With the increasing number of reputable financial institutions offering debt consolidation schemes, it is not difficult to find a reliable lender. You can begin with an online search with keywords 'debt consolidation loans' and you will find a number of options to choose from.

However, there are a few things you need to take into account before deciding upon a particular loan. Firstly, calculate your credit requirements. This should be inclusive of the principal as well as interest, so that you can come up with the final loan consolidation amount. It is advisable to repay smaller debts that are not covered in the consolidation scheme since if left on their own, the interests will keep increasing and will make it more difficult for your.

Once you have a clear idea of the total amount, you will have to find a company that provides loans for the amount of debt financing that you need.

Secondly, you need to find a company that is offering a lower rate than your previous loans, at least lower than majority of your loans, so that you can save some money on interest. There is no use in paying the same amount of interest even if you are consolidating loans.

A lower interest rate can actually help you repay your loans faster and in an easier way.

Thirdly, if you have a regular source of income, you can calculate the total amount of your consolidated debt as well as the interest that has to be paid on the same and see how much you can pay every month so that you can make sure that you do not have to pay a lump sum at a later point in time.

This would also make sure you are making payment towards your debts without having to compromise on your basic necessities. Since you can find debt consolidation companies by merely checking online, you should not take any of the companies on face value and try to figure out the terms and conditions in details and then decide upon your final choice.

You should also do a background check on the company with respect to their previous performances and ensure that they can take care of your problem.

Due to this heavy import of Japanese used vehicles, Kenyan government had started controlling the import of Japanese used vehicles to avoid un-healthy vehicles to Kenya. They set up some rules and regulations, which the importer must follow to import any vehicle from Japan.

Importing rules set up by Kenya Bureau of Standards are as follows:

  1. It is mandatory that all used vehicles imported to Kenya must not be more than 8 years old from the first year of registration.
  2. All these used vehicles, which is imported to Kenya, must be a right hand drive (RHD) except for some special vehicles like ambulance & fire engines etc.
  3. All these imported used vehicles must undergo the inspection done by JEVIC (Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Center) before being shipped to Kenya. JEVIC is a well know company in Japan providing used vehicle’s roadworthiness certificate, which an importer must need when clearing the imported used car from the port of Mombassa. How to avoid rejection of Imports Upon inspection For Quality?
The importer should inform his supplier of used vehicle about the requirements of the Kenya Standard(s) to import such item in to their country. They should enter an agreement with the exporter that if the product does not meet the requirements of the relevant Kenya Standard(s) when inspected at the port of entry in Kenya, it will be shipped back to the country of origin at the supplier’s cost.

Importers in Kenya can purchase Kenya Standards at the Kenya Bureau of Standards Head Office in Nairobi or at the KEBS Regional Offices in Mombassa, Kisumu and Eldoret.
